Message from the Leading Teacher
For those that haven鈥檛 met me, my name is Hayley Coates and I am a leading teacher at 海角社区.
This year, I am taking on a slightly different role, leading and supporting teaching and learning across the school. I feel privileged to be spending time in classrooms, coaching staff and supporting effective teaching and learning at 海角社区. Through the Chatter, I look forward to at times, highlighting what teaching and learning looks like across our school. This week, we are sharing specific information about phonics instruction across the school. I hope you find this information informative and helpful, particularly when supporting your child in the early stages of reading.
We are also excited to be working closely with Dr Ryan Dunn in Mathematics this year. Our focus will be on explicit teaching, responding to students鈥 needs, checking for understanding, and differentiating to effectively cater for all learners. Staff will have their first professional learning day/curriculum day with Dr Dunn on Tuesday 10 March, which falls after the long weekend. As a result, students will enjoy a four-day weekend.
From 11th to 13th March, our Year 3 and Year 5 students will participate in NAPLAN assessments. NAPLAN is just one snapshot of your child鈥檚 learning. It is designed to assess literacy and numeracy skills developed over time, and there is no special preparation or cramming required. The best support you can provide is calm reassurance and normal routines. Remind your child just try your best. Encourage a Positive Mindset and if your child feels nervous, you might say:
鈥淔eeling a little nervous means you care.鈥
鈥淭ake your time, read each question carefully.鈥
鈥淚f you get stuck, move on and come back to it.鈥
That鈥檚 it from me. Have a wonderful last weekend of Summer!
Hayley
New Build and Curriculum Days Term 2
We are pleased to let you know that our school will be moving into our new building at the beginning of Term 2. Thank you for your patience and understanding while we awaited final approvals. We intentionally delayed this announcement until all arrangements were confirmed so we could provide accurate information to our families.
To support a smooth and well-organised transition, the School Council has approved two student-free days. These days will allow staff to safely relocate furniture, learning materials, and equipment, and to prepare classrooms and specialist areas for students.
Student-Free Days:
- Monday, 20 April
- Tuesday, 21 April
All students will return to school on Wednesday, 22 April, to begin Term 2 in our new learning environment.
Upon commencement of Term 2, year levels and specialist programs will be located as follows:
- Years 5/6 鈥 Top Floor
- Years 3/4 鈥 First Floor
- STEM and Performing Arts 鈥 Ground Floor
- OSHC 鈥 Ground Floor
- Foundation and Years 1/2 鈥 Will remain in current spaces
- Art 鈥 Will return to the original art room near the basketball courts
- Library 鈥 Will return to the original library near the courtyard
- Clear signage and staff support will be in place to assist students during the first week.
The new building is looking great. Here is a little sneak peek鈥.
Phonics at 海角社区
At 海角社区, we teach explicit synthetic phonics in a systematic and structured way. Phonics helps children understand the relationship between letters (graphemes) and sounds (phonemes) 鈥 the essential foundations for learning to read and write. Phonics supports both decoding (reading) and encoding (spelling). For example, when children know that m鈥揳鈥搕 represents the sounds /m/ /a/ /t/, they can read mat independently. When spelling, they can hear the sounds in a word, break it into parts, and choose the matching letters. Example:聽 鈥渟hip鈥 鈫 /sh/ /i/ /p/ 鈫 sh-i-p. This knowledge empowers students to tackle unfamiliar words with confidence.
In our Foundation鈥2 classrooms, phonics is taught during the first 25-minute block of each day using UFLI Foundations. UFLI Foundations is an explicit and systematic program designed to build the foundational skills necessary for proficient reading. It provides a strong balance of structure and responsiveness to student needs, with clear routines, ample practice opportunities, and gradual release to foster independence.
During a phonics lesson, you might see students engaged in:
- Phoneme blending and segmentation practice
- Building accuracy and automaticity of grapheme鈥損honeme correspondences
- Reading words with previously taught concepts
- Explicit teaching of new sound鈥搇etter patterns
- Decoding (reading) and encoding (spelling) practice
- Reading and spelling irregular words
- Reading connected text to build fluency and confidence
We are incredibly proud of our superstar Foundation students and the impressive encoding skills they are already demonstrating so early in their schooling.

Cyber Safety
At 海角社区, we are proud to be in the process of becoming an Esmart school. We want to empower children with the skills and knowledge to independently manage their digital safety and wellbeing.
Many of our students enjoy playing online games at home, including Minecraft and Roblox. Recently, Roblox has been featured in the news, highlighting the importance of parents and carers understanding how the platform works and how to ensure appropriate safety settings are in place.
The Cyber Safety Project has developed a helpful parent guide that explains the platform and outlines practical steps you can take to help your child play safely and confidently.
Please find the link to the article below:
We encourage all families to take a few minutes to read the guide and review their child鈥檚 account settings.
